We were peeling roots to bake on the fire when I said:

‘You can’t die. But what would happen if you did?’

‘Nothing would be. Or rather, it would be, but there would be no time or place for it to be in. You see… If the truth isn’t known about when or where a thing happened, how can anything be separated? Everything would collapse into one.’

I just frowned and chopped my root.

Later, we lay down to sleep.

‘How old are you?’ I said.

‘As old as everything that’s ever been.’

‘Don’t you get lonely?’

‘Yes.’

I lay on my back and looked up. The stars weren’t visible through the trees.

‘But don’t we all,’ he said.

We were nearly out of the mountains. The forest thinned and stuttered to a halt on the dry plain. We sat and rested on a rock and looked over the flat land. The thin grass was brown. A herd of cattle grazed, white egrets on their backs.

‘If you know so much,’ I said, ‘how can you not know which one I am? If I really am what you say?’

‘The future is an unwritten truth. Not all potentials are realised.’

I took a drink from the water skin and looked south. It would be a long walk back to my prince. My leg was almost healed though I would always have a scar.

I handed the water skin to the prisoner. He grasped it between his bound hands and drank. He passed it back and wiped his mouth and looked south too.

I took hold of his hands and unlocked the shackles.

For a moment he was still and then he embraced me and kissed my cheeks. I felt his tears on my skin. They mingled with my own. I stood and we smiled at each other, shy now.

‘Thank you,’ he said. I nodded.

I did not really believe the man. Not all of it. I wasn’t what he thought I was but I wasn’t Denath. I was Abbeon. Perhaps I was a fool, but I wasn’t a Grey Man.

I shouldered my pack and walked east.
